Vol. 536 No. 2

Written Answers - Army Barracks Closures.

Austin Currie

Question:

173 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the concern of civilian employees at Clancy Barracks, Dublin 8, who claim that they were not adequately informed of their position when the barracks closes in July 2001; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13642/01]

Since the decision was taken to close Clancy Barracks I have met on two occasions with both the closure committee in the barracks and representatives from the Joint Industrial Council for State Employees to review progress in the matter of accommodating civilian staff who will be required to move following the closure of the barracks later this year. In addition, an information desk staffed by officials from the civilian employee section of my Department was provided in the barracks to answer questions on the various options available to civilian employees at the barracks. These options include relocation to the Curragh with existing work; redeployment to other Dublin units; and voluntary early retirement. Over 50% of the staff availed of this facility and were given specific information relevant to their own personal circumstances. I will be pleased to re-open the information desk if staff representatives within the barracks feel there is a need to do so. Alternatively, any staff member can contact my Department's civilian employee section directly where the specific options open to him or her can be discussed and explained.

Question No. 174 answered with Question No. 79.
