Question:

Richard Bruton

Question:

271 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children the level of nursing home subvention paid, indicating the average weekly payment; and the numbers in receipt of weekly payments across the range, distinguishing by each health board area. [13533/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 270 and 271 together.

The Health (Nursing Homes) Act, 1990, which came into effect on 1 September 1993 has two principal objectives. The first is to ensure high standards of accommodation and care in all nursing homes registered under the Act, and the second is to provide a new system of nursing home subvention to assist with the cost of care in a private nursing setting. Subvention is not paid to patients in health board extended care facilities.

In regard to the information requested by the Deputy, the latest figures from the health boards indicate the following:

*These boards do not classify whether a subvention is in payment to either a private or voluntary nursing home.
**Information on dependency levels was not readily available from these health boards. I have asked the chief executive officers of the boards in question to have the information compiled and forwarded to the Deputy as a matter of urgency.
