Vol. 536 No. 2

Written Answers - Departmental Properties.

Seán Haughey

Question:

457 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the long-term future of his Department's squash building at Howth Road, Clontarf, Dublin 3; the recent developments in relation to this issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13664/01]

The premises in question were surrendered to my Department in May 1999. At that time a commitment was given that the premises would continue to be used as a sports-leisure facility. In order to honour this commitment my Department meets the cost of retaining a temporary caretaker to ensure the continued use-maintenance of the building, along with assuming responsibility for current outgoings, such as telephone, gas, insurance and ESB payments. In the long-term, my Department intends to make arrangements to have a tendering competition to agree a long lease for these premises, which will allow the continuation of the sports-leisure facility.
