Vol. 536 No. 5

Written Answers. - Health Awareness Campaign.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

241 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children if arising from any recent reviews of the health services, he has in mind the introduction of a new men's health awareness campaign; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15064/01]

The National Health Promotion Strategy 2000-2005 published last year sets out a broad policy framework for the development of health promotion. The strategy contains a number of strategic aims and objectives and calls for the development of a national plan for men's health. It is hoped to commence work on this plan in association with the relevant stakeholders in the near future. The need for an awareness campaign will be considered in the context of the plan.

Question:

242 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children if in the course of his recent discussions on the health service, he has identified the need to introduce a new women's health awareness campaign; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15065/01]

The Women's Health Council is a statutory body set up in 1997 to advise on all aspects of women's health. Its mission is to inform and influence the development of health policy to ensure the maximum health and social gain for women in Ireland. The Plan for Women's Health 1997-1999 is currently being reviewed and a report is expected shortly. When the report is published, I will consult the Women's Health Council to determine what action, including the need for a public awareness campaign, is required.
