Vol. 536 No. 5

Written Answers. - Air Pollution.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

263 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the extent to which air pollution monitoring equipment is in use in or adjacent to the various towns and villages in north Kildare; if the equipment is of modern standards and capable of meeting current requirements; if monitors are adequately dispersed to achieve an accurate reflection of air quality in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15079/01]

I refer to the reply to Question No. 106 of 5 April 2001. The extent to which air pollution monitoring equipment is currently in use in or adjacent to towns or villages in a particular functional area, and whether the equipment is of modern standards, capable of meeting current requirements and adequately dispersed to achieve an accurate reflection of air quality, are all matters in the first instance for the relevant local authorities and since 15 February 1999, for the Environmental Protection Agency at a national level, as the designated competent body under article 4 of the Environmental Protection Agency Act, 1992 (Air Quality Assessment and Management) Regulations, 1999 (S.I. No. 13 of 1999).
