275 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the total sum paid by motorists into the ring fenced motor tax fund in each of the years 1998, 1999 and 2000. [14681/01]

The amounts shown for 1999 and 2000 relate to payments into the local government fund. The amount shown in respect of 1998 relates to the local government equalisation fund. In 1998, local authorities were empowered to retain certain motor taxation receipts collected by them. In addition to the sum of £108.356 million paid directly into the fund in 1998 local authorities retained £198.351 million.
