Vol. 536 No. 5

Written Answers. - Inservice Training.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

345 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide details of the funding provided for inservice and staff development in each of the education sectors in each of the past five years; and his views on the adequacy of this provision. [14631/01]

The Government is investing heavily in staff development and inservice training for teachers. As a result expenditure has been more than doubled in the case of post-primary teachers, and increased sevenfold for primary teachers, since 1996. Expenditure in this area in the year 2000 was more than £20 million.

The expenditure on incareer development in various sectors for the years 1996 to 2000 are set in the following table:

It will be seen that the overall expenditure has almost trebled in the period in question. I consider the present level of expenditure is satisfactorily supporting a major programme of incareer development for teachers-tutors in the sectors concerned. My Department is keeping the position under ongoing review and further financial provision will be sought to meet identified additional needs.
