Vol. 536 No. 5

Written Answers. - Institutes of Technology.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

391 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the contact that has been made by the planning and steering group set up to develop, advise on, facilitate and monitor the process of establishing the proposed Irish Academy for the Performing Arts with Waterford Institute of Technology regarding the submission by the institute to have a campus in Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15028/01]

A Government decision of 13 December 1999 approved the establishment of an Academy for the Performing Arts incorporating a headquarters and significant facilities on a site to be provided on the Dublin City University campus, a Limerick campus developing the existing Irish World Music Centre at the University of Limerick and an undergraduate professional dance facility based at the Firkin Crane Dance Development Agency in Cork. This decision does not encompass the establishment of a campus of the academy at Waterford Institute of Technology. The question of whether the academy establishes links with other higher education institutions, such as the institute, will be a matter for the academy itself.

A planning and steering group was established to develop, advise on, facilitate and monitor the process of establishing the proposed Irish Academy for the Performing Arts. The next steps in the development of the academy include the appointment of an interim governing authority and the appointment of a president. Work on this is under way in my Department, liaising with the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands.
