187 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to a claim made by a Donegal based solicitor alleging that gardaí at Letterkenny Garda station made illegal recordings of conversations between solicitors and witnesses at the Garda station; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Question:

188 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to allegations in the provincial press that gardaí in Letterkenny, Milford and Manorhamilton Garda stations used secret recording equipment to record conversations between solicitors and witnesses; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15421/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 187 and 188 together.

I am advised by the Garda that two chief superintendents have been assigned to inquire into the allegations in question. I am further advised that, to date, no evidence has been discovered that would support the allegations.
