Vol. 537 No. 2

Written Answers. - Energy Costs.

David Stanton

Question:

308 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the energy costs incurred by his Department each year for the past three years in each of the energy sectors respectively; the use made of renewable energy; his further plans regarding same; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15858/01]

In the main, the provision of accommodation for my Department is the responsibility of the Office of Public Works. As a result, my Department has no role in determining what energy source is used in any office – this is a matter for consideration by the Office of Public Works in the context of leasing or constructing a building.

Whatever the energy source used, my Department pays for it as a consumer and details of the expenditure in this area over the past three years are contained in the following table. Where my Department is not the major tenant in a building, the cost of the energy used is paid, in the first instance, by the major tenant and is subsequently reimbursed by my Department. Such requests for reimbursement do not contain a breakdown of expenditure between the various energy sources

used. For ease of reference this expenditure has been apportioned to the known expenditure on the various energy categories on apro rata basis for the three years in question.
