Vol. 537 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Jim Higgins

Question:

374 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals he has for a person (details supplied) at a primary school in County Mayo who did not qualify for resource hours tuition as he did not meet the criteria of having average intelligence or higher and who is unable to benefit from the existing school curriculum. [15537/01]

I am aware of the case raised by the Deputy. I understand that an application for resource teacher support in respect of the child in question was recently received in my Department. On initial investigation, my Department's inspectorate concluded that the needs of the child in question could be adequately addressed by the learning support teacher available to the school. Recently, the school authorities were advised accordingly.

In view of the particular circumstances of this case, I have asked my Department's inspectorate to review the child's needs with a view to ensuring that any additional support required is put in place without delay.

Nora Owen

Question:

375 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will arrange approval for a classroom assistant to be granted to a person (details supplied) in County Dublin. [15540/01]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that my Department has recently sanctioned 20 hours per week special needs assistant support for the child in question.
