93 Mr. Kenny asked the Taoiseach the estimated number of people who have travelled abroad on foreign holidays for each year since 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16016/01]

The estimated numbers of visits abroad by Irish residents classified by reason for journey are given in the following table:

(1) The table relates to the number of visits abroad and not the number of visitors abroad.
(2) From 1 January 1999, the classification by reason for journey was changed in accordance with Council Directive 95/57/EC. The new classification – business, holiday/ leisure/recreation, visits to friends/relatives and other – also accords with the recommendations of the World Tourism Organisation, WTO.
