Vol. 537 No. 2

Written Answers. - Euro Changeover.

Enda Kenny

Question:

101 Mr. Kenny asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the estimated cost to business of updating data processing systems for the changeover to the Euro on 1 January 2002; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16052/01]

It is not possible to make any meaningful estimate of the cost to business of updating data processing systems for the changeover to the euro on 1 January 2002. The following are some of the main issues which would preclude any meaningful estimate: every business operation is unique and consequently individual business needs will vary depending on the management of that business and the needs it perceives; costs are likely to vary substantially depending on the timing of actions by business management to update data processing systems e.g. actions taken now can be planned to greater effect, and the least cost options can be identified, whereas actions left until the end of this year are likely to prove considerably more costly to implement; many businesses may use the opportunity of the euro changeover as a rationale for updating their data processing systems generally, notwithstanding the fact that actual requirements for the euro changeover may be considerably less in monetary terms by comparison.
