Vol. 537 No. 2

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

130 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the position regarding the reopening of a railway line (details supplied) in County Cork. [15763/01]

Subject to feasibility studies, the Operational Programme for Economic and Social Infrastructure has earmarked funds for additional diesel railcars in respect of commuter services and possible new stations in the Cork area.

I understand that proposed railway developments in the Cork area are currently being considered by consultants who have been engaged by Cork Corporation and Cork County Council to draw up the Cork Strategic Plan, 2000-2020. The consultants issued an interim report and this, among other things, contained proposals that the area along the rail/land corridor from Blarneyvia Cork to Midleton be rezoned for major residential and commercial development. These proposals were put forward in the context of proposed major rail developments which would involve the re-opening of the line to Midleton and the opening of a number of railway stations along the line. I am advised that the consultants are close to finalising the report which will then fall to be considered by Iarnród Éireann and my Department.
