Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Army Barracks.

Richard Bruton

Question:

186 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Defence if he has reopened the negotiations on the sale of Clancy Barracks to Dublin Corporation; and if he will make the site available at a price well below the full market value in order that it will be possible to use it for social and affordable housing. [16694/01]

As the Deputy is aware, Clancy Barracks has been advertised by the selling agents, Hamilton Osborne King, for sale by public tender on 14 June 2001. It is my intention to generate the maximum return from the site for reinvestment in essential Defence Forces needs.

Prior to advertising the property for sale, meetings were held between my Department and Dublin Corporation and the Department of the Environment and Local Government. The view of the corporation and the Department of the Environment and Local Government was that the optimal solution would be to sell the land on the open market rather than have it purchased by the local authority for housing purposes.

My Department is, prepared to talk to any party interested in purchasing the property.
