Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cancer Incidence.

Bernard Allen

Question:

298 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if, further to parliamentary Question No. 166 of 1 December 1999, he has reconsidered his decision regarding the desirability of carrying out a health survey on the incidence of cancer in the Dublin Hill-Ballyvolane area. [16571/01]

The balance of scientific research to date has not conclusively established a causal link between electric and magnetic fields associated with power lines and cancer. International research projects in this area are ongoing and medical officers in my Department keep up to date with developments. Should conclusive evidence emerge of an unacceptable public health risk, I would seek to have remedial measures put in place by the appropriate Departments and agencies. With regard to information on the incidence of cancer in the area referred to by the Deputy, the query has been forwarded to the director of the National Cancer Registry for direct reply to the Deputy.
