Vol. 538 No. 3

Written Answers. - Medically Qualified Asylum Seekers.

Tony Killeen

Question:

248 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has any plans to utilise the skills of doctors and other qualified medical personnel, who are awaiting processing of their claims for asylum here; the number of such personnel currently residing here; and the plans he has to provide support for them to have their qualifications validated here. [18174/01]

I am advised that the office of the Refugee Applications Commissioner does not keep statistics in the format required in order to provide details of any qualifications held by asylum seekers. Any doctor can apply for temporary registration with the Irish Medical Council as long as he has obtained his primary degree from a medical school listed in the World Health Organisation Directory of Medical Schools, has completed a satisfactory internship of one year, and is a fully registered doctor in another country.
