Vol. 538 No. 4

Written Answers. - Treatment of Prisoners.

Alan Shatter

Question:

112 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the steps he is taking to investigate the manner in which a person (details supplied) was treated when a prisoner in Wheatfield place of detention and also the treatment of his parents; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18260/01]

I am informed by the Director General of the Irish Prisons Service that the person referred to is serving a five year sentence, with the last year suspended, imposed in Trim Circuit Court on 26 January 1999 for assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He is also serving a three and a half year sentence, imposed in the same court on 8 March 2000 for handling stolen property.

The complaints made by the prisoner in relation to an alleged incident in Wheatfield place of detention are the subject of an ongoing Garda investigation and therefore it would be inappropriate for me to comment further on this matter.
