Vol. 538 No. 4

Written Answers. - Nuclear Plants.

Question:

50 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if monthly reports are to be provided to the RPII by BNFL in relation to safety improvements introduced in Sellafield following the RPII's report concerning the storage of high level waste at Sellafield; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18074/01]

There is no arrangement whereby BNFL would provide monthly reports to the RPII on the implementation of the safety improvements recommended in the RPII's report of December 2000 on the storage of high level waste at Sellafield. However, the RPII is continuing to maintain regular contact with the UK nuclear installations inspectorate and BNFL in regard to BNFL's progress in implementing the safety recommendations contained in the RPII report.

In my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 27 on 27 March 2001, I referred to a number of the RPII's safety recommendations which have been carried out by BNFL. While I welcome the progress by BNFL in addressing the RPII's safety recommendations, I would like to emphasise that the long-term storage of large quantities of high level liquid waste at Sellafield is not acceptable to the Government and I am continuing to press the UK to accelerate the current process at Sellafield for vitrifying the liquid waste.
