Vol. 539 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rural Transport Initiative.

Enda Kenny

Question:

112 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will give details of the rural transport initiative managed by ADM; the resources attached to it in 2001; the counties and areas to be covered by the project; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18849/01]

The rural transport initiative is a programme under which a number of pilot rural transport projects will be funded over the next two years from a provision of £3.5 million set aside for this purpose in the national development plan. The initiative will be administered by area development management on behalf of my Department. The initiative was developed in conjunction with the rural transport sub-committee of the public transport partnership forum and earlier this year I issued a consultation document on the subject to which we received over 70 responses. The primary objective of the initiative is to promote and support the development of innovative, community based public transport projects.

The initiative will be open to community groups in all counties and I will formally launch it on 2 July next in Athlone. The expenditure under the initiative this year is expected to be of the order of £270,000 for which there is provision in my Department's Estimates.
