The national development plan provides for significant investment in mainline and suburban rail and sets out ambitious targets for Iarnród Éireann in enhancing the rail network. In seeking to address the many issues facing Iarnród Éireann, a small top level group was appointed in January 2001 to assist it in facing the challenges of expanding the rail network and delivering improved services to customers. The group consists of Bill Attley, former General President of SIPTU, Kevin Bonner, consultant and former Secretary General at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment and John Dunne, chairman of IDA Ireland and former director general of IBEC. This group is being assisted by Dr. Edmond Molloy, of Advanced Organisation and Management Development Ltd.
The group has been asked to examine the current industrial relations environment within the company and the challenges facing management, staff and unions to achieve maximum value for the customer and taxpayer from the major investment programme in the rail system over the coming years. It will also examine the current structures, procedures, processes and practices within the company at all levels for managing the changes necessary. The group will report shortly and I expect its report will provide a sound basis for Iarnród Éireann to respond successfully to the ambitious expectations of its customers in enhancing the rail network.
