Vol. 539 No. 1

Written Answers. - Toxic Herbicides.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

175 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he will advise landowners and local authorities on methods of maintaining amenity land and public parks without using toxic herbicides. [18973/01]

My Department licenses use of chemicals and biological pesticides including herbicides. A key objective is to promote integrated control to minimise use of chemical herbicides.

My Department funds the research, advisory and training functions of Teagasc which includes research on non-chemical means to control weeds and advice to farmers and growers on the use of such methods.

The maintenance of local authority amenity land and public parks is a matter for the Minister for the Environment and Local Government.
