Vol. 539 No. 1

Written Answers. - Vehicle Registration Tax.

David Stanton

Question:

215 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Finance if he has received representations asking him to consider reducing vehicle registration tax on mourning vehicles and chauffeur driven limousines used by funeral directors; his views on such representations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19082/01]

I have not received any such representations to date. As I have pointed out before, VRT is an important source of revenue for the Exchequer, especially given this Government's strategy of reducing other taxes such as PAYE and corporation tax.

VRT is paid on initial registration and any concession to one category of vehicle will only lead to similar requests from other groups. Accordingly, I have no plans to reduce the VRT on mourning vehicles and-or chauffeur driven limousines used by funeral directors.
