Vol. 539 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

280 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the serious deterioration in the health services to patients at University Hospital, Galway; if there was a report commissioned by his Department on the management of the hospital, as announced 18 months ago by the then Minister of State; if he received this report; if this report will be made public; and if he will make a statement on the findings in the report. [18930/01]

The disruption to services at University College Hospital for both patients and staff is in the context of phase II of major capital development works at the hospital. As the Deputy is aware, this most welcome development includes radiotherapy, cardiac surgery and orthopaedic trauma, as well as additional critical care beds, a coronary care unit, a cardiac investigation suite and rehabilitation. The total cost of phase II when completed will be around £78 million.

The hospital is currently surrounded by three major building sites as well as major excavation works on the grounds. I understand from the Western Health Board that there is also an ongoing process of decanting services and staff to enable progress of the building works.

Against this background, the activity at University College Hospital, Galway, has exceeded its service plan. This activity has been achieved while also developing new services at the hospital such as the supra regional cancer service, cardiovascular services, acute and chronic pain services, a diabetic day care service and MRI scanning facilities.

The Western Health Board has informed me that Deloitte and Touche was commissioned by the board to carry out an assessment of the management infrastructure in Galway Regional Hospital. I understand that the assessment has been carried out by Deloitte and Touche and its report is now being finalised. The board has informed me that the full report will be published when finalised.
