Vol. 539 No. 1

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

Michael Ring

Question:

320 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the reason it is necessary to have a second driving test centre in Castlebar, County Mayo; the reason the purpose built centre was not built large enough to accommodate testing needs; and if he will investigate the claims that the use of the second test centre for drivers is discriminatory as access to the centre is difficult. [18899/01]

In the interests of customer service, a temporary test centre was provided in Castlebar to deal with a backlog of test applications. The permanent test centre is adequate to deal with the underlying demand for tests. Test routes from the temporary centre are comparable in standard to test routes commonly in use throughout the country. I have arranged that my Department will review the adequacy of access to the temporary centre having regard to the concerns raised.
