Vol. 539 No. 1

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

353 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will carry out a feasibility study on the provision of a canal from Lough Allen to Dowra, County Leitrim. [19106/01]

Waterways Ireland, a North-South Implementation Body for inland waterways, was established on 2 December 1999 on foot of the British-Irish Agreement and the supplementary Implementation Bodies Agreement signed in March 1999. It has the functions of management, maintenance, development and restoration of certain inland navigable waterways systems throughout the island, principally for recreational purposes.

I understand that at present Waterways Ireland is carrying out a preliminary survey to assess the navigability of the River Shannon north from Lough Allen towards Dowra. When this initial work has been completed, a decision will be made on whether a more formal and complete study on the matter is warranted.
