Written Answers. - Proposed Legislation.

Nora Owen

Question:

132 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Health and Children the progress made to date to ensure the inclusion of psychotherapist in the forthcoming legislation on the regulation and registration of professionals to medicine; the discussions which have taken place in his Department in this regard; and if psychotherapists will be included from the outset in the group of those covered by this legislation. [19302/01]

Gay Mitchell

Question:

133 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children his proposals to include psychotherapists in the statutory registration system to be applied to certain professions in the health and social services field under the proposed PAM regulatory Bill when it is published. [19303/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 132 and 133 together.

Officials from my Department have met the professional bodies representative of psychotherapists. I am currently considering the case made by the bodies for inclusion in the first tranche of professions to be included under the proposed legislation. I will be in contact with the bodies shortly. The Deputy should note that the proposed legislation will allow for the statutory registration of further professions by means of Ministerial Order.
