Vol. 540 No. 1

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

390 Mr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if a decision on the future of the Ulster Canal was reached at the North/South meeting; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [19691/01]

A consultant's report, A Feasibility Study into the Reopening of the Ulster Canal, together with a reaction thereto from Waterways Ireland, was presented to the waterways sectoral North/South Ministerial Council meeting attended by me and Mr. Michael McGimpsey, MLA, Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure in the North in Enniskillen on 27 June 2001. An executive summary of the report issued with the joint communiqué released after the sectoral meeting.

It was agreed that Minister McGimpsey and I would have the report assessed in our respective Departments with a view to considering the matter further at the next Waterways sectoral meeting in the autumn.
