Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Irish Coastguard Service.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

199 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources when a four wheel drive quad will be provided for the Tramore unit of the coastguard service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21249/01]

The coastguard has a programme of equipment acquisition and deployment geared to ensuring the most effective provision of services countrywide. The director of the coastguard is constantly assessing the case based on risk assessment by location for improving resources. The director is also undertaking a major programme of re-equipment and refurbishment of facilities available to coastguard volunteers. Where it is clear that the provision of new facilities and the re-equipment and upgrading of existing facilities will add to our capacity to save lives at sea, this will be provided subject to available resources. Having regard to the above, it is the coastguard's intention to provide a quad for the Tramore unit before the end of the year.
