Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

243 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will consider giving approval for a feasibility study to be carried out on the reopening of a light railway link between Cork and Bandon. [21820/01]

I understand that various rail based options for the future development of public transport in the Cork area were examined as part of the preparatory work for the development of the Cork area strategic plan, 2001-2020. This plan which was commissioned jointly by Cork County Council and Cork Corporation is, I understand, currently being discussed by both councils.

This plan includes a proposal for the development of suburban rail services serving Blarney, Cork and Midleton. Irish Rail has undertaken to carry out a feasibility study into the proposal when the Cork area strategic plan is adopted. However, I am informed that a rail link to Bandon was not among the transport options put forward in the final report from the consultants. In the circumstances, I understand Iarnród Éireann does not propose commissioning a feasibility study into this proposal.
