Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Nora Owen

Question:

859 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when he will publish the report into the circumstances of the death of a person (details supplied); the plans he has to publish the post mortem results on this person; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21164/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the circumstances surrounding the death of the person concerned is the subject of an ongoing investigation and that, although this investigation is progressing as expeditiously as possible, it cannot be stated when it will be concluded. I am further informed that the results of a second post mortem carried out on the body of the deceased are not yet available. In any event, however, it is not established practice that results of post mortems would be forwarded to my Department; rather, they are forwarded in the first instance to the Garda authorities and, where appropriate, to the Director of Public Prosecutions as part of the investigation file. Accordingly, the question of publication by me of such results does not arise.

Question:

860 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of deaths which have taken place countrywide which are the subject of Garda inquiries since January 2001; the number which have been designated as murders; the sex and age of each victim; the location of each suspicious death; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21165/01]

Details of the number of murders and manslaughters recorded by the Garda Síochána since 1 January 2001, are provided below, categorised according to Garda region and division, sex of the victim and detection status, as at 24 September 2001. A categorisation according to the age of the victim is provided separately. I emphasise that these statistics, as provided by the Garda authorities, are provisional at this stage and are subject to change, as Garda investigations into all these incidents are ongoing.

861 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will make a statement on the tragic killing of a six year old girl by her father, outlining exactly when the Garda Síochána was notified of this child's abduction; the actions taken by the gardaí which led to the discovery of the child and her father in Clonmel; and the actions which have been taken to investigate this tragedy. [21166/01]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 94 of 3 October 2001.
