Written Answers. - Garda Training.

Alan Shatter

Question:

935 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the special training which is to be provided to members of an Garda Síochána to facilitate the implementation of the Children Act, 2001; the budget that has been allocated for this purpose; and the person or organisation which will provide such training. [22283/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources that, to date 90 juvenile liaison officers have been trained in mediation skills in order to facilitate the various functions which gardaí will have to provide arising from the Children Act. The training has been provided by two agencies – Tallaght Mediation Bureau and Real Justice. A budget of £40,000 has been allocated in 2001 for training arising from the Children Act.
