Vol. 541 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Dan Neville

Question:

192 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason transport to a special needs school was withdrawn from a person (details supplied) in County Limerick. [22587/01]

The pupil referred to by the Deputy had been availing of a transport service provided by the Charleville and District Association for the Handicapped for a number of years. My Department provided a grant towards the annual cost of this service.

However, as the association is no longer in a position to continue the transport service, my Department has been requested to provide a suitable alternative transport service for the pupil. My Department offered a transport grant to the child's parents to assist them in making private transport arrangements. However, the child's parents have requested that a transport service be put in place.
My officials are currently investigating possible transport arrangements for the child. As soon as these investigations are completed, my officials will be in contact with the family and the school authorities.
