Vol. 541 No. 4

Written Answers. - Prison Medical Service.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

407 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will arrange for counselling services in addition to the psychiatric treatment a person (details supplied) may be receiving. [22879/01]

All prisoners are examined by a medical officer shortly after their committal to prison. Where appropriate, medical treatment may be given to some prisoners but only on the advice of the professional services available. It would be inappropriate of me to comment publicly and in detail on the medical treatment that any individual prisoner is receiving during his or her time in custody and I will not do so in this case. I can, however, inform the Deputy that the director of the prison medical services has assured me that there are no immediate medical issues giving reason for undue concern in this case.
