The Intoxicating Liquor Act, 1988, (Age Card) Regulations, 1999, provide for a voluntary national age card scheme whereby any person who has attained 18 years of age may apply for an age card at his or her local Garda Station in order to confirm that they have attained the legal age for the purchase of intoxicating liquor. The Garda community relations section in Harcourt Square has been given responsibility under the regulations for the issuing of the cards and I am informed by the Garda authorities that the total number of cards issued up to 5 October 2001 is 41,699. I am also informed that, due to a temporary difficulty with the Garda database for the cards, a breakdown of the number of age cards issued by county is only possible for the period up to 13 September 2001. A total of 35,976 cards were issued up to this date. I am assured by the Garda authorities that the difficulty with the database will be rectified in the next few days and I will forward the up to date figures to the Deputy at this stage. In the interim, the following table shows the number of age cards issued by county up to 13 September 2001.
