Vol. 541 No. 4

Written Answers. - Swimming Pool Projects.

Sean Fleming

Question:

433 Mr. Fleming asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if it is necessary for a local authority to provide the balance of funding from its own resources where funding is available from the Department under the local authority swimming pool programme; and if the local element of the funding can be provided by way of local fund-raising initiatives or by a combination of local fund-raising and funding from the local authority. [22760/01]

Under the Local Authority Swimming Pool Programme, 2000-2002, which is administered by my Department, grants of up to 80% of the eligible cost of the swimming pool development are available, subject to the total grant not exceeding £3 million. The balance of funding must be provided by the local authority who are not precluded under the terms of the programme from using funding donations generated through local fund-raising.

Question:

434 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the progress which has been made to date in relation to the provision of a new facility (details supplied) in County Cork. [23215/01]

In general there are four stages in a swimming pool project under the Local Authority Swimming Pool Programme, 2000-2002, which is administered by my Department. These are: preliminary report stage; contract document stage; tender stage; and construction stage. The Department's technical advisers, Office of Public Works, evaluate each stage and local authorities cannot proceed to the next stage of a project, unless prior approval issues from my Department. In relation to the provision of the new pool facility in question, the position is that in July 2001 I approved the preliminary report submitted by the local authority for the proposal. This approval allowed the local authority to move to the next stage of the process, that is, arranging the preparation of contract documents for the work proposed.

435 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the progress which has been made to date in relation to the provision of a new facility in County Cork. [23216/01]

In general there are four stages in a swimming pool project under the Local Authority Swimming Pool Programme, 2000-2002 which is administered by my Department. These are: preliminary report stage; contract document stage; tender stage; and construction stage. The Department's technical advisers, Office of Public Works, evaluate each stage and local authorities cannot proceed to the next stage of a project, unless prior approval issues from my Department. In relation to the provision of the replacement pool facility in question, the position is that the local authority were advised in December 2000 by my Department to seek tenders for the work involved. It is a matter for the local authority to submit a copy of the recommended tender to the Department for approval, when available.
