Vol. 541 No. 4

Written Answers. - Third Level Academic Standards.

Ivan Yates

Question:

167 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on whether there is a danger to academic standards in third level colleges from declining enrolment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22945/01]

Recent statistics do not indicate that there has been any decline in the overall numbers entering third level education. Within the university sector the numbers enrolled in full-time undergraduate courses have increased steadily over the past five years. Enrolments have risen from 49,623 in 1996-97 to over 60,000 for the 2000-01 academic year. Similarly, the number of enrolments in full-time courses in the technological sector has increased from 39,260 in the 1996-97 academic year to approximately 48,000 in the 2000-01 academic year.

It is anticipated, however, that due to declining birth rates there will be a drop in the 17 and 18 year old age cohort. It is also anticipated that the drop in this cohort will be compensated for by increased participation from mature students, students with disabilities, students from disadvantaged backgrounds and students from ethnic and other minority groups. Access initiatives funded by my Department are being directed towards increasing the participation of these groups.

Academic standards in third level institutions are the subject of ongoing quality assurance procedures and I do not see any danger to academic standards in enrolment trends.
