Vol. 541 No. 5

Written Answers. - Banking Sector.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

110 Ms Clune asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the fact that consumers are being forced to use electronic banking without adequate induction courses or training; if, in the interest of consumer protection, she will intervene; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23238/01]

John Browne

Question:

132 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the action she will take in respect of a practice change by a company (details supplied) where banking methods have been fundamentally changed to the detriment of the consumer; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23239/01]

In her regulatory capacity under the Consumer Credit Act, 1995 in relation to financial institutions, the Director of Consumer Affairs last Friday announced her intention of writing to the bank concerned for an explanation as to why she was not informed of its intentions to restrict services.
The director has stated that, although she accepted that financial institutions needed to embrace the opportunities offered by new technology, it was imperative that these institutions had regard to the needs of all their customers, particularly vulnerable customers, such as older people and people with disabilities. I am sure Deputies will join me in expressing support for the approach being taken by the director.
