Michael Ring

Question:

141 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of new secondary schools built in each of the past five years where a new catchment area had to be created to provide an enrolment for that school; the location of each school; and the subsequent enrolment for each of these schools. Question:

144 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the changes which have taken place nationally to catchment areas for secondary schools; the discussions which have taken place between the parents, the principals of the schools in the locality, the teachers' representatives of such schools, and the Department of Education; if he will provide examples of catchment areas in County Mayo that have been amended; and the effects these amendments have had on the local community. [23583/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 141 and 144 together.

Two post-primary schools were established in the past five years which necessitated the development of new catchment areas and consequent adjustments to the catchment areas of existing second level schools. These schools are Glanmire, County Cork – a new community college opened in September 1997, enrolment on opening, 135; and Moville, County Donegal – a new community college opened in September 2001, enrolment on opening, 89.

A further two post-primary schools opened in the same period which required no adjustment of existing catchment boundaries. These schools are Castletroy, County Limerick – a new community college opened in September 2000, enrolment on opening, 158; and Knocklyon, Dublin 16 – a new community school opened in September 2000, enrolment on opening, 120.

My Department does not maintain cumulative data regarding adjustments that have been made over the years to catchment boundaries. Accordingly, no such data are readily available for County Mayo or any other particular area. I can confirm, however, that it is the practice to consult with local educational interests where any such adjustments are being contemplated.
