*A breakdown by species is not readily available for 1996.
The data above only reflect the planted areas of commercial broadleaves and do not include broadleaves planted near rivers, roads and scenic areas. In addition, the per hectare stocking level of broadleaves is 250% that of conifers. When these factors are taken into account, the target of 20% broadleaf planting set out in the strategic plan for forestry is being met.
In addition to the afforestation set out above, a further 44,000 hectares approximately was reforested following clearfell under licence during the years 1996-2000. A breakdown of species is not available in respect of this area. There are no statistics available in my Department in respect of non-grant aided tree planting, but the level of such planting for commercial purposes is likely to be very limited. However, a significant amount of environmental tree planting is undertaken by local authorities and Dúchas.
