Vol. 542 No. 2

Written Answers. - CJD Incidence.

Bernard Allen

Question:

318 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of cases of CJD in the Southern Health Board area for the past five years; the number of cases of vCJD for the same period; and the number of suspected cases of vCJD. [23979/01]

Between 1997 and 13 October 2001, one case of CJD was notified by the Southern Health Board. This case of CJD was notified in 1997. No case of vCJD has been reported by the Southern Health Board in the same period. Variant CJD is confirmed by a pathological examination of brain tissue, which is always carried out post mortem.
