Vol. 542 No. 2

Written Answers. - Traveller Accommodation.

David Stanton

Question:

370 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 132 of 2 October 2001, he has received a progress report from Cork County Council regarding the implementation by the council of the five year programme regarding the provision of accommodation for Travellers; the number of Traveller families accommodated or assisted by Cork County Council or on the roadside respectively; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23692/01]

My Department issued a detailed questionnaire on the implementation of the five-year local Traveller accommodation programmes, 2000-04, to each local authority on 28 March 2001. Returns received from Cork County Council indicate that 15 units of accommodation were provided in 2000 and 2 in the January-April period 2001.

The annual count of Travellers, which was completed on 24 November 2000, indicated that 112 Traveller families were accommodated or assisted in the provision of accommodation by Cork County Council. There were 30 Traveller families on the roadside in November last compared to 45 in November 1999.
