Vol. 542 No. 2

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

383 Mr. M. Moynihan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when work on the Kilbrin sewerage scheme will begin. [23952/01]

This scheme has been approved for funding under the rural towns and villages initiative.

In July 2001, I approved Cork County Council's proposal for the appointment of a client's representative to advance the procurement of the wastewater treatment plant by way of a grouped sewerage scheme that also involves the Buttevant and Doneraile schemes. It is now a matter for the council to prepare the tender documents.

Contract documents for the collection system in Kilbrin are currently under examination in my Department and will be dealt with as quickly as possible.

Michael Finucane

Question:

385 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when grants for the provision of group sewerage schemes will be approved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24265/01]

I refer to the reply to Question No. 698 of Wednesday, 3 October 2001.

Michael Finucane

Question:

386 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the status of a sewerage scheme proposal (details supplied) in County Limerick; when this sewerage scheme will commence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24266/01]

Michael Finucane

Question:

398 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the funding which has been provided to alleviate flooding problems at a location (details supplied) in County Limerick; when this funding was provided; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24281/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 386 and 398 together.

The proposed water and sewerage schemes for Foynes both include measures which will help to eliminate the causes of occasional flooding in Foynes. In addition, I understand that the local authority is separately considering other flood prevention measures which could be put in place in the short-term.

The Foynes water scheme is included as a scheme to commence construction in my Department's water services investment programme, 2000-02, at an estimated cost of £1.6 million, 2.031 million. I approved the Limerick County Council's tender recommendation for the civil works contract last August. The council's tender recommendation for the mechanical and electrical works contract was submitted to my Department recently and is being examined.

Contract documents for the sewerage scheme submitted to my Department by the council in 1992, and revised in 1996, have not been approved. The Foynes-Shanagolden sewerage scheme is 15th on the list of water and sewerage schemes submitted by Limerick County Council in response to my Department's request to local authorities to undertake fresh assessments of the needs for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessments. The priority lists were taken into account in the framing of the water services investment programme, 2000-02 announced in July 2000. Given the priority rating afforded to the scheme by the council, the level of competing demand and the funding available, it has not been possible to include it in the programme.
