Vol. 542 No. 2

Written Answers. - Roads Projects.

Austin Currie

Question:

418 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands her plans for the resurfacing of Chesterfield Avenue, the main road in the Phoenix Park; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24164/01]

A fully integrated plan for the major renovation of Chesterfield Avenue in the Phoenix Park has been prepared by my Department and will be submitted for planning permission shortly by the Office of Public Works which is undertaking project management of the scheme. The safety of all park users has been paramount in the preparation of this plan which has been developed in consultation with the Dublin Transportation Office and will involve a variety of traffic calming measures compatible with the historic ethos of the park. The project has been prepared within the context of a revised management plan for the future management of the park currently being drafted.

Subject to availability of funding, this programme of works will be carried out on a phased basis in order to minimise disruption to park users. The scheme will significantly improve the safety of all park users, but in particular, pedestrians, cyclists and other recreational users. The outcome of the work to be undertaken will, by any standards, represent a significant enhancement to this national historic park.
