Vol. 542 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sports Capital Programme.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

482 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if works on a project (details supplied) in County Donegal can commence. [24173/01]

I allocated a grant of £100,000 to the club in question under the 2000 sports capital programme, which is administered by my Department. Payment of grants of £100,000, 126,974, and over, under that programme, must be certified by my Department's technical adviser, the Office of Public Works. The Office of Public Works cannot certify payments until all aspects of health and safety regarding construction have been satisfied. In this case, a preliminary health and safety plan for the project has been approved by the Office of Public Works, but the club has not yet provided the fire safety certificate required. My Department wrote to the club on 6 July 2001 requesting the certificate. The club this week indicated that it has acquired the certificate and has undertaken to forward it for examination immediately.

A deed of trust was required for grants exceeding £39,000 under the 2000 programme. The deed of trust provides, inter alia, for a refund of the grant in the event of the facility not continuing to be used for the purposes for which the grant was allocated. Deeds of trust are executed by the Chief State Solicitor's office. In this particular case the deed of trust is currently being put in place.
