Vol. 542 No. 2

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

527 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a person (details supplied) in County Kildare was refused an educational grant; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23914/01]

My Department understands that the person, to whom the Deputy refers, previously pursued a national certificate course in the Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street, in the two academic years 1996-97 and 1997-98. It is further understood that he has now applied to County Kildare VEC for a maintenance grant under the third level maintenance grants scheme for trainees 2001 – to pursue a national certificate course at the Institute of Technology, Tallaght. Under the terms of the third level maintenance grants scheme for trainees a grant holder may, in general, only receive funding for the approved duration of one TLT-aided course. As the student in question previously pursued two years of an approved course under the terms of the scheme, he is ineligible for funding for his current course.
