Question:

138 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the progress made regarding his Department's representations to the United Nations regarding moneys outstanding from the UN for compensation due to the State in respect of the deaths of and injuries to Irish soldiers serving with the UN in Lebanon and Cyprus; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23727/01]

The Department of Foreign Affairs makes ongoing efforts through Ireland's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York to recover the full value of claims made against the UN in respect of death and disability incidents affecting Irish personnel serving in UNIFIL and UNFICYP.

As regards UNIFIL, £8.565 million has been received from the UN and £0.662 million remains outstanding.

As regards UNFICYP, £0.36 million has been received from the UN and £0.419 million remaining outstanding.

In total, £8.925 million has been received from the UN and £1.081 million remains outstanding.
