Vol. 542 No. 2

Written Answers. - World Trade Centre Bombing.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

147 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has considered providing special aid to Irish families residing in the United States of America who lost family members in the bombing of the World Trade Centre through Irish charity organisations in New York; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23894/01]

During my visit to New York at the end of September, I met representatives of Irish emigrant groups who have been assisting the families of Irish-American victims of the attacks on the World Trade Centre.

I was pleased to have the opportunity

personally to express my appreciation to these groups for the enormous support they are

providing to those who lost family members or who had family members injured as a result of this tragedy.

During my visit, I announced a special grant of $300,000 to assist Irish emigrant groups in dealing with the consequences of this terrorist attack. This grant is in addition to the normal funding which is provided every year to emigrant groups in the US and is made up as follows:

$

Emerald Isle Immigration Centre

112,500

Project Irish Outreach

112,500

Aisling Irish Centre

37,500

Irish Apostolate, USA

37,500
