172 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the high evidence of learner drivers using the M50 motorway; the enforcement action which has been taken to date; and if he will ensure that the gardaí pursue this matter more vigorously in the future. I am informed by Garda authorities that the M50 is the subject of constant patrolling by units from the regional traffic divisions and the divisional traffic units.
One unit from the regional traffic division is specifically assigned to patrol the motorway enforcing the road traffic laws and responding to any emergencies which may arise on this particular road. I am further informed that there is no evidence to suggest that there is extensive use of the M50 motorway by learner drivers. There are many motorists with ‘L' signs displayed on their vehicles, but they may not be learner drivers.
Dedicated patrols are allocated to the M50 motorway with covert and overt enforcement of the Road Traffic Acts, 1961, as amended. There is no evidence to indicate widespread contravention of the traffic laws in relation to the issue raised by the Deputy.
Nevertheless, specific patrols will be arranged to further deter learner drivers from illegally using the M50 and this issue will continue to receive attention.
