Vol. 542 No. 3

Written Answers. - Quality Bus Corridors.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

37 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the provision she has made to support the development of quality bus corridors or green transport routes in the Cork region; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24328/01]

The draft final report of the Cork Area Strategic Plan, currently under discussion by both Cork Corporation and Cork County Council, contains a number of proposals for the development of green transport routes in Cork which would incorporate bus priority measures. In its contribution to the development of the plan, I have been supporting the introduction of quality bus corridors through the provision of very significant investment, under the national development plan, in new buses in the city by Bus Éireann in recent years.

I am happy to note that Cork Corporation, in co-operation with Bus Éireann, has embarked on a study to consider the development of two quality bus corridors in Cork. I understand that surveys are currently under way on the Bishopstown to city centre and Grange-Douglas to city centre routes and I would hope that bus corridors can be implemented on these routes as soon as possible.
